CHAPTER ELEVEN:

Demi

An hour later, we say our goodbyes to Cam and Jovie and Cade’s parents, thanking them for dinner.

Settled in the truck on our way home, I glance over at Cade. “Dinner was nice.”

I’d expected at least a little grief for leaving Cade, my friends, and Maybury eight years ago with no contact after. But Cade was right. All of them, Cade’s parents, Cam, and Jovie, welcomed me with open arms. Not one bit of snubbing or coldness from any of them.

Cade grins. “It was. I’m sure Felix agrees.”

The glutton groans his agreement from the back seat where he lays full bellied and content. At least Leta didn’t feed him steak and twice-baked potatoes.

“It feels good to connect with people. I’ve missed Maybury and everyone here.”

Los Angeles never felt like home. Maybury and Cade will always be my home.

Cade squeezes my hand. “Everyone has missed you, too.”

My lips bow into a smile. “I’m really excited for lunch tomorrow. I hope Ally can make it.”

Shayna had texted Jovie back to say she could make it to lunch too.

My smile fades. “What happened to Liam after he and Ally parted ways?”

Liam Kennedy is one of Cade’s best friends. They’ve been friends since grade school.

I can’t help but feel sad for Liam and Ally. They practically grew up together. Liam’s mom and Ally’s mom are best friends. Or were. I don’t know if the falling out between Liam and Ally affected their mothers’ friendship too. I hope not.

Liam and Ally had been friends since childhood, and now they have no relationship, not even a friendship. I remember being jealous of Ally, of her relationship with Liam, until Cade and I started dating. Their relationship was pure and sweet, holding hands, whispers, thoughtful gestures, and private jokes between them. I thought for sure Laim and Ally would be married by now with a house full of kids.

“Liam was confused and devastated over their break-up. And when he found out Ally was engaged to another guy…” Cade sighs. “He was really hurt. Liam moved to Concord maybe a year after Ally moved back to Maybury. Like Jovie said. Ally’s changed. Liam thought Ally might be interested in rekindling a relationship after her divorce, but apparently not. She completely ignored Liam. And as Jovie said, Ally quit socializing with everyone from our friend group. I guess except Everleigh.”

I nibble on my lower lip. “Everleigh and Ally were always close.” Of my friend group in school, Everleigh and Ally were the closest. I recall how devastated Ally was when Everleigh moved. But Liam was there to soften the blow of losing her friend.

“It’s really too bad it didn’t work out for Liam and Ally.”

Cade frowns. “Yeah, it is. Liam couldn’t stay here anymore. He needed to leave. Now, he’s dating a girl from Concord. The relationship sounds serious.”

My heart squeezes in my chest. “Good for Liam. I hope he finds happiness.”

Despite my relief for Liam that he’s able to move on and find love again, I mourn for the loss of Liam and Ally and what could have been.
